Energy Concepts

The country needs energy concepts.

The energy transition is an electricity transition. At the same time, we need solutions for heating and mobility. We are working on this with municipalities, our partners and politicians.

Energy Concepts

The energy transition begins locally – be part of it!

Through the interplay of wind, solar, and biomass, along with the use of storage technologies, we are supporting communities or even entire districts in contributing to the energy supply in the future as local energy hubs, thereby generating financial returns for the region in addition to energy. For us, the formula still holds true: Expansion of Renewable Energies = Climate Protection = Species Protection.

We want to supply a large number of German households with energy (electricity & heat) by 2030. Get your city or municipality involved!

We work closely with citizens, authorities, landlords, and politicians to raise awareness, highlight revenue potential, and increase the acceptance of new technologies in communities. Innovation is fun when everyone is involved and the benefits for all are correspondingly high.

Energy transition is heating transition

Heat Transition in Rural Areas – Solutions for Municipalities. The heat transition doesn't just affect large cities and new builds – it's a central challenge, especially in our villages and small towns. Old heating systems, high renovation costs, and rising energy prices make it clear: we need communal solutions that combine climate protection, security of supply, and affordability.

Our e-paper „Heat Transition in Rural Areas“ shows how innovative approaches such as local heating networks, seasonal thermal storage, and photovoltaic-thermal systems are already being successfully implemented today – and what opportunities this offers for municipalities and citizens.

Sector coupling

UMaAG provides support for new and innovative power supply concepts: Sector coupling – intelligently networking energy

Sector coupling connects the electricity, heat, mobility, and, prospectively, gas or hydrogen sectors into an integrated energy system. It is a central component of the energy transition and a key element on Germany's path to climate neutrality. With the expansion of wind energy and photovoltaics, the share of renewable energies in electricity supply is continuously increasing. These energy sources provide clean electricity, but their generation fluctuates depending on the weather. Sometimes more energy is available than is currently needed, sometimes less. Therefore, in the future, not only generation must be oriented towards consumption – consumption must also be able to react flexibly to supply.

This is where controllable loads, storage systems, and smart grids come into play. Particularly in the areas of heat supply, charging infrastructure, and industry, loads can be strategically shifted and surplus renewable electricity can be used effectively. At the same time, grid operators' interventions to stabilise the electricity system – so-called redispatch measures – have been increasing for years. This incurs high economic costs and shows that generation, consumption, and grids need to be better coordinated.

Utilising regional potential through sector coupling

Rural regions and counties with good areas for wind and solar energy will produce significantly more energy in the future than they can consume locally. This presents a great opportunity for regional value creation, security of supply, and competitive energy prices.

The UMaAG is developing solutions with partners to harness these potentials. These include, among others:

  • Electricity usage for heating (e.g., heat pumps, power-to-heat)
  • Electricity usage for e-mobility and charging infrastructure
  • Conversion of electricity into storable energy carriers such as gas or hydrogen
  • Combination of wind energy, photovoltaics, storage, and flexible generators
  • Intelligent District and Energy Concepts for Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Use

This is how connected systems are created, which Green living, connecting modern mobility and decentralised energy generation. Surplus energy can be used regionally, stored, or specifically marketed to other consumers.

Driving innovation forward together

The UMaAG works with technology partners, municipalities, companies and universities to implement such concepts. Together, we develop practical solutions to make the energy transition more efficient, economical and suitable for everyday life.

We have launched an innovative heating concept for Ilsenburg with the town of Ilsenburg and HarzEnergie. Details here.
