Heat for the Future: Green District Heating as a Solution for Ilsenburg
Heating must be reliable, affordable, and simple – today and in the future. This is precisely what the heating transition in Ilsenburg is all about. While more than half of our electricity already comes from renewable energy sources, heating our buildings continues to cause high costs and dependencies on gas and oil. Many citizens are asking themselves: How will I keep my home warm in the future without overspending?
IBE Ilsenburg Bioenergie aims to provide an innovative, on-site solution. Umwelt Management AG and Harz Energie GmbH & Co. KG are planning, in close cooperation with the town, a modern, climate-friendly heat supply from regional energy sources – reliable, with long-term calculable costs, and independent of fossil fuel imports.
The basis for the heating solution is municipal heating planning, which is currently being drawn up for Ilsenburg. It shows where a heating network makes sense and where individual solutions are a better fit. Where many buildings are close together, district heating offers decisive advantages: the heat is generated centrally and delivered to the houses via a well-insulated network. Within the building itself, a compact transfer station replaces the individual heating system.

Infographic Explanation:
- Biomass heating and power plant Here, CO is made from regional wood waste.2Neutral heat gained.
- Buffer tank Flexibility, it stores excess heat for peak times.
- Heating network Flow and return lines for heating under roads and pavements.
- Heat transfer station Compact and efficient transfer of heat within the building.
For the people of Ilsenburg, this means, above all, a relief:
- no need for major investment in new heating systems,
- no maintenance, repairs or fuel storage,
- stable and transparent heating prices,
- more space in the house thanks to the removal of the old system, and better air quality on site.
The project is supported by the Federal Funding for Efficient Heat Networks (BEW). Costs will be reduced and the price of heat will be kept affordable. The possibility of citizen participation in heat supply is being examined.
A voluntary survey in Ilsenburg in 2025 already showed a high level of willingness to connect – a strong sign of confidence in this project.
