Umwelt Management AG UMaAG and Energiequelle Invest in joint repowering project in Esterwegen

Press release

Cuxhaven/Esterwegen, 10 November 2020. At the end of October, two new wind turbines became operational in Esterwegen. The turbines were erected as part of a repowering project. Repowering involves replacing older turbines with a smaller number of new ones that meet the latest technological standards. This allows significantly more electricity to be generated with fewer turbines on the same area of land.

The repowering project in Esterwegen is particularly important to Umwelt Management AG UMaAG.

Uwe Leonhardt, a member of the Management Board of Umwelt Management AG UMaAG, explained: „Repowering projects are generally important for countering climate change with renewable energies and ensuring sustainable renewable energy generation. Esterwegen is our first repowering project. We look forward to implementing many more projects of this kind in Germany.“

The park's output was thus increased from 3 MW to 8.4 MW.

Three Enercon E-58 wind turbines, erected in 2002 with a hub height of 70 metres and a generator output of 1 megawatt (MW) each, have been dismantled at the Esterwegen wind farm. Two Enercon E-138 turbines with a hub height of 160 metres and an output of 4.2 MW each have been newly completed.

The operator of the plants was and is Windpark Esterwegen GmbH & Co. KG, in which, alongside a multitude of limited partners, Energiequelle Invest GmbH and Umwelt Management AG are involved. As has been the case since the commissioning of the old plants in 2002, Energiequelle GmbH will continue with the technical operational management and Umwelt Management AG with the commercial operational management.

In connection with the wind farm, Umwelt Management AG UMaAG and Energiequelle will erect an e-charging station in the town hall car park, which will be publicly accessible. Furthermore, the Energiequelle Foundation is providing a sum of €200,000 for charitable purposes.

Christoph Hüntelmann (Mayor of the Samtgemeinde Nordhümmling) and Mayor Hermann Willenborg (Mayor of Esterwegen) are also delighted about the successful implementation of the project.

„In Esterwegen, we are investing in the latest technology, making an important contribution to the energy transition. The park will supply approximately 5,500 households per year in the future, and around 16,500 tonnes of CO2 will be saved.“.

Originally, a large inauguration celebration was planned for September 2020. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this has been postponed to spring next year. The successful commissioning is expected to be duly celebrated in April or May 2021.
